Why do we do what we do?
A man and a woman approached the Post Office door at the same time. The man opened the door for the woman. She looked at him and said, "You don’t have to hold the door for me because I am a woman." He looked back at her and said, "I’m not. I’m holding it because I am a gentleman."
How many times do we do things for people because of who they are? Do they deserve to have the door held open? Basing our actions on whether or not someone is deserving can be dangerous. Why do I say that? Because if God only blessed those who are deserving – where would we be?
We ought to bless others, help them, and do good because we are God’s children. And that’s the way He is. Remember He causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust. Of course, we have to be good stewards of our resources. Thinking that way may simply be a way of justifying not doing good when we have the opportunity. After all, what does it take to be courteous to somebody or offer an encouraging word. How much does it take to smile and bless someone?
Jesus said He is the Door. Everytime we share our faith we someone, we are open the door to heaven. And no one deserves to be there except God Himself. Let's hold the door open for others because of who we are.
A Roman historian said of the early Christians: "See how they love each other." Let’s do good because we are God’s children and in so doing glorify our Father in heaven (Matt. 5:16).
